Socio-epidemiological characteristics of acute alcohol poisoning in the Republic of Bashkortostan (Russia)

High mortality rate of acute poisoning causes severe social and economic burden. Aim: to study structure of fatal acute poisoning cases at Republic of Bashkortostan during the period of 1981 – 2012 years. Material and methods: official toxicology monitoring database was analyzed. Summary amount of cases is 13 752. Results: in 1980 – 1990 acute alcohol poisoning mortality rate was stable 3,3 – 6,2/100 000 population. Since 1991 dramatic rise of poisoning mortality appeared and the first maximum 17,7/100 000 was reached in 1995 and the second maximum 25,3/100 000 population was reached in 2001. Then poisoning mortality decreased slowly to 3,8/100 000 population in 2012. Results of toxicological and social-demographic analysis of fatal acute alcohol poisoning cases are presented. Conclusions: dramatic increase in alcohol mortality in Bashkortostan region of Russia in the 1990s was caused with the development of severe socio-economic crisis in the country and in the region. Mortality from acute alcohol poisoning is a sensitive marker of socioeconomic disadvantage.
