Aim: to determine the severity of insomnia, risk of alcohol abuse, and depression in energy drink users and compare them with a control group.
Methods. An anonymous online questionnaire was created that captures the fact, context of energy drink consumption, demographic data, and also includes the insomnia severity index (ISI), the alcohol abuse risk test (AUDIT), and the Zung depression scale. Using the Mann-Whitney U-test, the age difference between regular energy consumers and other respondents was revealed. The relationship between the severity of insomnia and the risk of alcohol abuse with the frequency of consumption of energy drinks, revealed by calculating the Spearman rank correlation coefficient.
Results. The study involved 813 people 79.2% (644) of them women, the average age was 20.8 ± 3.4 years. 187 (23%) have never tried energy drinks, 345 (42.4%) noted isolated cases of consumption, 138 (17%) consume energy several times a month, 101 (12.4%) – several times a week, 42 (5.2%) – several times a day. 634 (78%) people answered that they do not smoke, 51 (6.3%) people reported drug use. The method of multiple regression revealed a statistically significant relationship between the frequency of energy drink consumption and the male sex (p<0.001), with a lower level of education (p<0.001), with the fact of cigarette smoking (p<0.001) and drug use (p<0.001). Using the Mann–Whitney U-test, the age difference between regular energy consumers and other respondents was revealed (p<0.001). The relationship between the severity of insomnia (p=0.02) and the risk of alcohol abuse (p<0.001) with the frequency of consumption of energy drinks, revealed by calculating the Spearman rank correlation coefficient, was statistically significant.
Conclusion. We found that frequent energy drink use is associated with male gender, lower education and age, smoking and drug use, severe insomnia, and a high risk of alcohol abuse. These groups of people are becoming more vulnerable to the adverse effects of energy drinks.
