Introduction. The article is describing design and methodology of the study of psychoactive substance use, as well as assessing the consequences of the initial period of the COVID-19 pandemic and their impact on substance use in one of the vulnerable population groups – pregnant women.
Aim. Presenting design and methodology of the study of psychoactive substance use by pregnant women, its changes and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Results. The study was conducted as an anonymous survey in inpatient settings between December 2020 and February 2021 using a set of research tools: Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST), retrospective assessment of psychoactive substance use (the “calendar method”), the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K-10) and the Revised Event Impact Scale (IES-R), adapted to assess changes during selected time periods associated with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition obstetric history data, selected biochemical indicators, markers of alcohol and nicotine use, as well as pandemic consequences and socio-demographic information were collected.
Conclusion. The set of methods used can be recommended to study the use of and changes in psychoactive substances by pregnant women, and factors affecting the use both in an emergency situation like the initial period of the COVID-19 pandemic, and in a simplified form in daily practice of obstetric-gynecological and narcological services. The information obtained can be used as the basis for decisions about the need for preventive interventions.
