The role of «addiction memory» and mental images in maintaining addiction. Possibilities and techniques of psychotherapeutic intervention

Аннотация:
The article shows the role of long-term memory in forming various psychopathological disorders, particularly, psychoactive substance use disorders. The role of mental images, maladaptive reward memories in initiating and maintaining a drug-seeking behavior is discussed. The author emphasizes the importance of special sense-making memories, beliefs and specific mnemonic traces («abnormal experience within abnormal experience») obtained in an altered state of consciousness (ASC). The article reviews possibilities of reconsolidation, destabilization and modification of memory structures, mental images and underlying emotions affecting craving and motivation to seek and take drugs. The article describes the practice of psychotherapeutic correction of dysfunctional memories of reward and the special meaning of this experience using the techniques of art therapy, exposure, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
