Аннотация:
Background. Seizures typically occur mainly in persons with disorders due to the use of psychoactive substances which have the anticonvulsant properties: barbiturates, benzodiazepine tranquilizers and, to a lesser extent, alcohol. Seizures occur when the use of alcohol is terminated during the first days of alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS). The development of seizures or their epileptiform equivalents against the background of alcohol withdrawal is a common phenomenon that is pathogenetically determined and can subsequently lead to the formation of psychoorganic syndrome.
Aim: to systematize scientific data on the history of studying alcohol-related seizures, their pathogenesis and hereditary factors that play a role in their development.
Methods. When writing the review searches were undertaken in two representative databases: Elibrary, PubMed and Google Scholar. The search of scientific articles published from 2012 to 2022 was performed. The following words were used as the search instruments: alcohol-related seizures, alcohol-related epilepsy, complicated alcohol withdrawal syndrome, alcohol-related seizures, alcohol withdrawal seizures.
Results. The review of available scientific information sources was performed, data were systematized and briefly submitted, and the information regarding the history of studying alcohol-related seizures, their pathogenesis and hereditary factors that play a role in their development was provided.
