Background. In Russia in 2020, the incidence of alcohol addiction was 40.4 per 100,000 population. Compared with the general population, individuals with alcohol use disorders are nearly 10 times more likely to commit suicide. We suggest that the severity of alcohol dependence is closely related to the presence of a history of suicidal behavior.
Purpose: to study associations of clinical signs of severity of alcohol dependence in patients with various forms of suicidal behavior.
Methods. The study included 384 patients. Of these: 23.7% (91/384) – women, 76.2% (293/384) – men. The mean age of the patients was 41.92±7.9 years. Depending on the presence of suicidal behavior, 2 groups of patients were identified: with a history of suicidal tendencies (n=154); comparison group (n=230) – without suicidal behavior. Were used: clinical-psychopathological, psychometric and statistical research methods. The following scales were used: the Alcohol Withdrawal State Scale, the Colombian Suicidal Intention Seriousness Scale. Statistical processing was carried out using software packages STATISTICA 10, Microsoft Excel, IBM SPSS Statistics 26. The normality of the distribution of quantitative variables was determined using the Shapiro-Wilk test.
Results. In the study sample, patients with suicidal behavior are characterized by an earlier age of onset of systematic consumption and the formation of alcohol withdrawal syndrome. The earliest age of onset of alcohol consumption, high daily tolerance, a more severe degree of alcohol withdrawal syndrome and the presence of such complications as convulsive seizures are noted in patients with external forms of suicidal behavior. For patients with internal forms of suicidal behavior, a history of alcoholic delirium was characteristic.
Conclusion. There is a possible correlation between the severity of alcohol dependence and suicidal behavior.
