Introduction. The development of modern technologies affects all spheres of human life, including leisure. The use of computer games is often considered as a behavior that contributes to the appearance of dependence due to the high motivational attractiveness of the game. However, the connection between the development of dependence and the specific internal and external motives of the players has not yet been established. The study of motives and needs underlying why people play online games can lead to a deeper understanding of the relationship between the excessive use of online games and psychological well-being.

Results. An overview of available scientific sources has been systematized and briefly presented to the study of motivation for online games, as well as certain components of motivation as predictors of problematic use of online games and Internet game dependence.
Conclusion. Game motivation is a complex multifaceted phenomenon that reflects the psychological needs of players with both social and problematic use of online games. Existing studies show that a high commitment to game behavior is associated with a set of game motives that increase the time spent in the game. The desire of the players to satisfy through the game the needs frustrated in real life, relatively simple and limited set of actions, leads to an increase in the game time, and also increases the risk of problematic use of online games, dependent behavior and a decrease in psychological well-being.
